Social media questionnaire
Questions
- How long do you spend one social media a day?
- Have you had more positive or negative experiences with social media?
- Do you know everyone that you have on your social media accounts ?
- What was your first social media account.
Sian-
1- 4 hours
2-positive get to see what friends post and keep in contact with family abroad , but have had one negative experience where someone made a tinder account with my pictures
3-no
4- Instagram
Freya -
- 2 and a half
- Positive
- No
Ben -
- 4 hours
- Both - negative was getting hacked and a fake account getting a fake account made of me but the positive is that i can see what all my friends and family are doing.
- No
- MySpace
For the first question i asked how long each person spent on social media both Ben and Sian said 4 hours which is quite a long time where as Freya said 2 and a half which is less. The average time people spend on social media is 2-3 hours but this can all depend on the person and what they do in a day.
For the second question i asked if the person if they had more of a positive or negative effect with social media both Sian and Ben said they had both had a positive experience as for Ben he could keep with with his friends and family and for Sian she could keep up with her friends to and keep up to date with her family abroad but Ben said his negative effects were he had been hacked before and a fake account made of him and Sian had a fake account of her made on tinder to. Freya said she has only had positive effects with social media and she spends less time on social media then the other 2 and the other 2 spend more time and have had negative effects so maybe how much time you spend and how much you invest in social media can change how postie and negative it can be.
My third question was do you know everyone that is following you on your social media accounts and they all answered
no. This could be why both Sian and Ben have had fake accounts of themselves made as if they don't know everyone that is following them than someone can just take their pictures and send them to someone without them knowing. Also people tend to let friends of friends follow them because they assume that if there friends are friends with them they should be alright but that is not the case sometimes.
My last question was what was your first social media account and both the girls said Instagram and Ben said Myspace. Myspace was created in 2003 where as Instagram was created in October 2010 this could indicate that Ben was introduced to social media earlier than the other two.

‘Very few teens say that using social media has a negative effect on how they feel about themselves; many more say it has a positive effect. Twenty-five percent say social media makes them feel less lonely (compared with 3 percent who say more); 18 percent say it makes them feel better about themselves (compared with 4 percent who say worse); and 16 percent say it makes them feel less depressed (compared with 3 percent who say more).’
I feel like this is a valid point as many people can express themselves on social media and can also find and meet people who are interested in there hobbies and ambitions that they would not normally meet just in day to day life and not feel judged.

‘Researchers have looked at general anxiety provoked by social media, characterised by feelings of restlessness and worry, and trouble sleeping and concentrating. A study published in the journal Computers and Human Behaviour found that people who report using seven or more social media platforms were more than three times as likely as people using 0-2 platforms to have high levels of general anxiety symptoms.’
I agree to this to some extent as people do look at other people’s lives and think they are perfect or look at an Instagram model and compare themselves to them. But you have to remember you do not know what’s going on behind closed doors so should not assume their lives are prefect.

‘Scientists have evaluated social isolation in many studies, and have determined that it can lead to a host of mental, psychological, emotional and physical problems including depression, anxiety, somatic complaints and many others.’
I feel like social media is an easy place for cyber bullying to take place so I do agree that it can lead to everything that it says but I do believe that it is not all negative and these people may have had things like depression first and then look at other people’s lives and think they are perfect or look at an Instagram model and compare themselves to them. But you have to remember you do not know what’s going on behind closed doors so should not assume their lives are prefect.

’The majority of teens — 59 percent — said social media make no difference in how depressed they feel.’
I agree with this as if people have the right privacy settings on and only allow friends to see what they post then it can just be a fun way to see what your friends are up to.

‘The report comes in the wake of research by Ofcom and the Information Commissioner’s Office which found that 45% of UK adults had experienced some form of online harm.’
I agree that that many people would have most likely experienced some form of online harm as it is such an easy way to be mean to someone behind a computer.
